Would you like to join the Clear-out team with your brother Mrs. Fisher? Oh no, I mean I would love to but… “I’m sorry sir, but I’ll have to decline that offer.” I answered. “Oh, why is that? I thought you always wanted to join them.” “I’m over the whole family thing now; I think I’m more suited for the marines’ sir. It’ll be fine.” “Ah, I see, I always knew you wouldn’t let something like that be a burden to you.” He says. “Do you know why I see you as the best recruit in your class?” he continues. “No sir, to be honest, I don’t know why or if I should deserve the title.” I answered.

“Well you are I should say, the most determined recruit, you would volunteer for any job given to you. Your effort in training also made you better than the others in this compound. You seem much looked up to by your friends. But, some things you don’t have that kept you from being the best of the best Millie.” “What is that sir?” I asked. “You need to be respected by your team, when I see it, your team barely knows you, you’re always the one to stay silent and say nothing, just a background piece. You’ve got to open up to others Fisher.” “I understand sir.” I reply “I’m not done yet.” He said “One important thing, up until now, you lacked defiance.”

“Sorry but isn’t that a bad thing?” I asked. I could say, I was a bit confused. “Well, don’t get me wrong, it is a bad trait that is true; a bit of rebellious nature will always help.” “In what way will it help?” Now I was really confused. “If you always follow orders, if you always follow the rules, what is there for you? You’ll just become a mindless drone. Have you ever stopped and thought, does it even make sense? Now this doesn’t mean go against every single regulation in life, or start to commit crimes, but know your common sense. It’s okay to speak up when you know it’s wrong, even if it’s against the rules. But most importantly, follow your beliefs and yourself.” “Oh, thank you sir.” I had to admit, I felt myself blushing a bit, and I think he noticed. “There is no need to be embarrassed, I know you’ll be a great solider. When I was a recruit, I was the most troublesome kid there was, and now look where it’s gotten me to, the highest chair in the compound.” He said. “Yes sir, I hope I will.” I reply. Right now, I had no idea what to say, well, I had nothing to say really. “Why don’t you go back to your platoon? I’m pretty sure your team is missing you.” “Yes sir.” As I walk up to the door, I asked one last question. “If you said you knew what I was doing, why didn’t you stop me?” “Hmm, I thought it’ll make an interesting story for the future, and I wanted to see what would happen.” “I hope I’ll become famous for the midnight attack.” I joke.

The next day, I had a final marksman test and martial arts exam as our examination to graduate from boot camp. I have to say, these weeks I’ve been in this mess, it’s changed the way I think overall. All I was thinking about was the words the senior instructor said to me. The way to the Graduation ceremony, we made our way to a giant stage made of marble and stone. There were boxes and crates on at the center of the clearing. As the event started, each of were called out to get our recognition and our badges. As names were called, I began to look for Richard. I haven’t seen him for two weeks for some reason, I guess I was just too invested in training I ended up forgetting about my friends. Oh man, what about Allie? I haven’t heard from her in ages! I was sure she was okay back at home, but imagine how lonely she was, all of her closest friends gone away to join the military. And Alex! I wonder how he’s doing at the Advanced Training Center, I hope he’s okay. I was thinking so much, I haven’t even heard my name from the podium. “Millie Fisher?” The announcer calls. I jolt back to reality. “Oh yes! I’m here!” And I dart up to the stage.

Making my way to the podium, there was a woman waiting and she had a plate of some sort. “Congratulations Fisher on graduating with top ten scores! I know you worked hard on it even with the pressure you get with your instructors. And how you may be looked as weak and in constant need of aid. And that crazy thing you did back there with the final combat simulation.” I laughed a bit on that one. I guess the story circled around to compound. “We are all proud of you. Do you have anything to say?” she asks. “Well, not much to say, I do have to thank my family for giving me the guts to do think of this crazy idea of joining the military. They’ve taught me a lot about how to not survive but thrive, live, make up with what you have, in such uh… hmm… ‘Desperate’ times as I would like to say.” As I was handed my plaque, she directed me to the next area.

Oh come on now, you know they’re fine where they are. Stop thinking too hard, go easy on yourself. I had to push away that thought. She also gave me my official Marine armor; it even had the name, ‘Midnight Girl’ engraved into the right shoulder plate. I gave a smirk as I thought about that night. “I guess I’ll be forever known as that from now on.” I joked. After the event was over, I went back down to my platoon; they greeted me with smiles and hi-fives. “Yeah! Great going on getting such an achievement! Bet you’re proud of yourself!” Tim says to me in the barracks. “Man, I thought you were going to get kicked out from the incident.” Thomas said. “Thanks guys, but seriously, thanks for joining me on that insane plan back there. Couldn’t have done it without you guys.” I reply. I look down at my new, fresh uniform; the clean, sleek outfit gives a smooth feel to it. This is going to be my new life I guess.

In a few months, this might end up getting as worn as the ones the veterans used.  “Hey guess what! We’re going on a two month leave!” Andrew exclaims as he bursts into the room. “Holy crap we are?!” Thomas yells. “Oh thank god!” Tim says. “I can’t wait to go home! I thought we were going to be immediately getting sent to combat!” I had nothing to say, I was too shocked to talk. Tears started to well up into my eyes, not of sorrow, but of pure happiness. It’s not like I never had them, but none compared to the one I’m having now.  I can finally see all the people I missed and just have a normal life for a while. “Hey, Millie, you okay?” Andrew asks. “What? Oh yeah I’m fine. Just that you saying that reminded me of someone.” I desperately try to evade the conversation and I couldn’t. “Actually, I have someone I want to meet, do you mind?” “Wait but we weren’t done talking- “Sorry! Got to go see ya! Maybe some other time but not right now Sorry talk to you later!” And I took off as fast as I can to Richard and his platoon. I heard he was the leader of his team like Andrew was the leader of my team.

Man! That was a close one! It was about to get weird!  I tried to get the thought out of my head; I didn’t want to look childish in front of my team. When I found Richard in his cot, I decided to some catching up with him. “Hey Rich, it’s been a while! How’s it going?” “Oh, what’s up? Where’ve you been all this time, midnight girl?” I reply back, “You know, doing what I do, getting into trouble, being the best there is. The usual stuff that I do every day, where’ve you been all this time?” “Ha, all I’ve been doing is telling people what to do, a pretty boring job really.” There was a moment of complete silence between the two of us. Richard breaks the silence. “Well, better pack up, I want to go home. You should to.” “I got that done already, what do we do with our gear?” I ask. “Hey! It’s the boss with the midnight girl!” Oh man, its Andy again. “What do you want from us?”

“Hey now, no need for that hostility now. What are you guys doing?” Andy had a sort of sly and nervous look on his face. “Andy, go away, we’re trying to socialize here without disruptions.” Richard eyes him to shoo him away. “And stop with that face of yours, be normal.” I add in. “Alright, rather protect my body than tell good joke anyway.” I gave him a wink and made my way back to the barracks

I was on the bed in the middle of the night; I couldn’t sleep at all. “Hey, guess you’re still awake?” it was Andrew that said that. “Huh, you too, maybe the thought of going home’s making me all nervous.” I reply “How’s that? Aren’t you excited to go back?” “I don’t know why I am really. Could be that I won’t know what to expect.” “Oh, don’t worry about it; you’ll want to go home as soon as we get into the real action.” Andrew says. “I’ll look forward to that.” I joke. “Hey Millie, don’t worry about it, It’ll be fine. I’m sure you’ll make the most of the time have for our leave.” “Your right, I shouldn’t be so tense about it.” I respond. “Thanks Andrew.” And I drift into the most peaceful sleep I had in weeks.
